If you’ve never seen a group of people compete in a “caber toss” (which involves throwing a giant wooden pole), this is your chance. The Scottish Highland Games are a local favorite for a reason. Between the bagpipes, the Highland dancing, and the massive selection of traditional food, it’s a great way to spend a Saturday outdoors. It’s family-friendly and usually has plenty of space for the kids to run around while you grab a snack and enjoy the music.

2. Asian Lantern Festival: Into the Wild

When: Select nights through January 18, 2026 Where: Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens

The Asian Lantern Festival is winding down its run this month, so if you haven’t seen it yet, now is the time. It’s a 3/4-mile walking path through the zoo filled with massive, hand-crafted illuminated sculptures. Since it’s an evening event, it’s the perfect excuse to enjoy the cooler night air. It’s a separate ticketed event from the daytime zoo admission, so make sure to grab your tickets online ahead of time.

3. EPCOT International Festival of the Arts

When: Starting January 16, 2026 Where: Walt Disney World Resort

For many locals, this is the best festival of the year. Unlike the busier Food & Wine Festival, the Festival of the Arts feels a bit more relaxed. You can walk around World Showcase to see live chalk artists, Broadway performances, and galleries of incredible Disney art. Even if you aren’t a big theme park person, the cooler January weather makes walking the park much more enjoyable.

4. Otter Fest

When: January 31, 2026 Where: Wekiva Island

If your idea of a perfect outdoor weekend involves a cold drink and a view, you have a great option on the 31st. Otter Fest at Wekiva Island is a celebration of craft beer and wine right on the river—perfect for those who want to hang out by the water.

5. Manatee Watching

When: All Month Where: Blue Spring State Park

When the temperatures drop, the manatees head to the springs. Blue Spring State Park is one of the best spots to see hundreds of manatees huddled in the warm water. It’s a beautiful walk along the boardwalk, but keep in mind that the park often hits capacity early on weekends. If you’re planning a trip, try to arrive right when they open to ensure you get in.
